Umbria feels real in a way that few Italian regions still do. The hilltop villages haven’t been polished for tourists. The abbeys are still functioning. Bevagna has barely changed since the Middle Ages.

Piazza Silvestri — with its perfectly preserved Palazzo dei Consoli and two Romanesque churches facing each other across the square — is one of the most intact medieval piazzas in Italy. The stone lanes, the quiet, the complete absence of mass tourism: Bevagna has a rare quality that attentive couples immediately recognize.

For a destination wedding that wants to genuinely surprise guests with something unexpected, Bevagna is the right choice. You won’t find it in the most popular guidebooks — and that’s precisely its value.

Spoleto is vertical, dramatic and surprising.

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta with its sloping medieval piazza, the Ponte delle Torri — a 13th-century aqueduct bridge spanning a gorge 80 meters below — and the Albornoz Fortress dominating the skyline: this is a city unlike anything else in Umbria. Perugia is Umbria’s largest city and offers a variety of settings that no other center in the region can match. Corso Vannucci bathed in golden evening light, Piazza IV Novembre with its medieval fountain, the narrow lanes of the historic center, terraces overlooking the valley.

For receptions, Perugia and its surroundings offer some of the region’s most elegant venues — from historic city-center palaces to estate properties on the hills around Lake Trasimeno.

Best for: larger weddings, couples who want a city with full infrastructure and services, high-end receptions.

Umbria’s largest lake — the fourth-biggest in Italy — offers a completely different atmosphere from the rest of the region. The villages along the shore (Castiglione del Lago, Passignano), and the islands reachable by boat (Isola Maggiore, Isola Polvese), offer settings that feel almost surreal for a wedding.

For international couples accustomed to seaside weddings, Trasimeno offers something genuinely unexpected: the calm of an inland lake, reflections on still water, sunsets that turn everything orange.

Best for: couples who want water without the sea, summer weddings, destination weddings with an unusual lakeside atmosphere.

A few questions that can guide your decision:

How many guests are you expecting? Smaller abbeys and castles have capacity limits. Bevagna and Sassovivo work beautifully for intimate weddings (up to 50-80 guests); Perugia and the larger estate venues comfortably handle 150-200 people.

What type of ceremony are you planning? Religious, civil or symbolic? Not every venue is licensed for every type of ceremony. Historic churches have specific procedures for religious weddings — especially for non-Italian couples. Make sure your wedding planner or local contact clarifies this early.
